Spoiler Free Guardians Of The Galaxy Review

Marvel's cosmic side of their cinematic universe has lift off.
It could have gone otherwise since the property is barely known by audiences. The excellent marketing drive and positive reviews will surely see it have a successful opening weekend. It will be interesting to see if that run will continue against the Teenage Ninja Mutant  Turtles, which will be opening in the following weekend. Guardians of The Galaxy, is a story about a group of misfits, who come together to save the Galaxy from a vengeful Kree, Ronan - The Accuser.  The film is directed by James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay with Nicole Perlman, and features a cast including Chris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaVin DieselBradley CooperLee PaceMichael RookerKaren GillanDjimon HounsouJohn C. ReillyGlenn Close, and Benicio del Toro.
The story is simple and consistent. The movie does not take itself too seriously. The coming together of the group is not forced and very practical. At first, each team member has his own ulterior motive. But when they come with grips of the true power of the infinity gem, they align for their own survival and the fate of the entire galaxy. There are explosions and lot of actions but they flow with the story as opposed to Micheal's uncontrolled impulses. The banter between the group is where it shines for me. The characters are distinct and well drawn out. Even Groot's singular monologue does not get stale.

Those watching this motive in 3D will feel its richer aesthetic quality and visually appealing constructs. While nerds will freak out as most of the comic book's mythology is brought to life in the movie, the wider audience might get lost in the jargon of the intergalactic fantasy world, that James Gunn builds. This is where Gunn skillfully uses humor and action to compensate for the knowledge gap.

Is this the best Marvel movie this year? Maybe not, Xmen: Days of Future Past and Captain America - The Winter Soldier will come above it on my list. But that might not be such a fair comparison since both properties have around for much longer and have huge following already. Guardians of the Galaxy on the other hand, was unknown and was such a huge risk. Thankfully, it was one that paid off handsomely. This movie will be the most fun you have had this summer.

Top 5 Moments in Game Of Thrones Season 4.

The Game of Thrones Season Four may have come and gone but its  effects still ripple across our consciousness.  There are more moments that linger on more than others. And in this article, 5 key moments will be highlighted as those that truly stand out and shape the narrative of the rest of the series.

1. The Death of King Geoffrey

The internet erupted when probably the most hated man in Westeroos choked to death in his own blood. His death almost recompenses for the Stark family's losses and few will shed a tear for his demise.

2. Lannister Tyrion's Defense

The tortured imp gave a passionate speech when he just could not take the orchestrated lies anymore. Like in Eyrie, he asks for trail by combat thereby rejecting the plea deal his brother had made with their father. Who can blame him? After what happen to Nerd Stark, anyone would take such offers with a pinch of salt.

3. The Red Viper Versus The Mountain

This fight is a very memorable scene in the season. It brought an abrupt end to the series favorite: The handsome Red Viper, Prince of Dorne. At a point in the melee, he had a huge advantage, having struck the Mountain with an almost fatal blow. But his hesitation to finishing his mountain off was his undoing. Gregor Clegane, un-balanced him and then proceeded to imploding his brains in one of the most bloody depictions in television.

4. Bran Meets The Three-Eyed Raven.

Bran's story arc had been getting a bit stale for a while. And viewers have been wondering when is he ever going to walk again and find his destiny. The scene where he meets the Three-Eye Raven is a key moment in this season because brings firstly closure to the fact that he will never walk again and secondly, that He will Fly. Which begs the question, will he fly by "warging" a dragon or physically have that ability?  I guess we shall find out in season 5.

5. Lannister Kills Lannister

The jostling between Father and son had been going on for a while. It reached its climax with Tyrion killing his father in the privy. It is tough to justify killing one's father and a sense of guilt will forever substitute whatever must have driven Tyrion to do so. Yes, Tywin slept with Shae, sentenced him to death amongst his numerous other vices against Tyrion but I don't believe Tywin, who was so proud of the Lannister Legacy would have gone through with actually killing his own son.

Dawn Of The Planet of The Apes - The Review

In the spirit of full disclosure, I don't like movies that the story evolves around animals beating up humans. But something in the latest rendition of the Franklin J. Schaffner's classic movie, shed my age-long prejudice.
It continues from where the last one ended. The Apes have built a home in the woods and are striving while their cousins, the Humans, are nearly decimated by a virus pandemic. A pocket of human survivors, those immune to the virus, are searching for a dam to restore power to the city of San Francisco.  The problem is that, the dam is located near the Apes home.
They first encounter the Apes at the beginning of the movie and after a skirmish with them which results in a dead ape, causes one of the Apes, Koba, wanting revenge but Caesar refuses as he does not want to be dragged into a war with the humans. This narrative is played throughout the movie until its reaches breaking point, culminating in an all-out war between the primates.

The visual effects were stunning. One can barely tell if the apes were trained monkeys or computer-generated-graphics due to the almost life-like behaviors of the apes. This is due to the impeccable work of Andy Serkis, who over the years, really helped reduce the gap between reality and computer animation.
Gary Oldman  was severely under-used, just appearing in a few scenes.
There is no movie without its flaws. And because the movie was so good, the mistakes were few and far between and in as much as one would love to forgive them, they were so glaring that one just has to highlight them. Most conspicuously of all was, how a rag-tag army of apes with no weapons and military training could easily over-run a heavily fortified fortress. For Christ's sake, the humans even had a tank! If the 7-1 thrashing of Brazil by Germany has taught us anything, is that passion alone can only take one so far.

The scene where Koba over-comes his animal instinctive fear of  fire is thought-provoking. Although, Koba along with the rest of his chimp army overcomes it in an hate-filled, adrenaline-pumped  way. It begs a few questions. Can a genetically modified animal be more human or be a more intelligent animal? Humans with all their intelligence still have innate instincts that govern their behavior. Or is intelligence something tangible that it allows anything with enough of it to overcome its natural boundaries and fears?
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is well-crafted, intelligent and viewers will enjoy it.

Transformers: Age of Extinction - The Review

This is one franchise that has a hate-hate relationship with film critics. Its best review, on rottentomatoes.com is 57% which went to the first edition. Normal folks on the other hand, generally rate the franchise highly. Why is it that? Could it be the fast cars and explosions? It will be fool hardy to expect drama, from a movie about warring alien races for one. Though there are times, one wonders , aside the pyrotechnics and beautifully choreographed chaos, if this movie might have been more intelligent in other hands.  Not taking anything away from Micheal Bay- The master of destruction. He has built a risky venture into one of the most commercially successful movie franchises.
Prelude to this sequel, Micheal Bay recognized the shortcomings of the previous installments and promised a different take on it.
That promise only lasted about 30 minutes into the movie. After all the major characters were introduced, it was back to the same 'ol, same 'ol. Funny thing is, the audience love it.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is a 2014 American science fiction action film based on the Transformers franchise. It is the fourth installment of the live-action Transformers film series and stars Mark Wahlberg in the lead role. A sequel to Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the film takes place four years after the invasion of Chicago. Like its predecessors, the film is directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. The screenplay is written by Ehren Kruger, who has served as screenwriter since Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The film features an entirely new cast of human characters and is the first in the series to feature the Dinobots. Returning Transformers include Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Leadfoot, and Brains (Wikipedia).
(Spoiler Alert)
The autobots are being hunted after the aftermath of the battle of Chicago. Optimus Prime and co. are in hiding. Mark Wahlberg- inventor, cum scientist cum hacker and as you will soon discover in the movie, cum "Rambo", discovers a dilapidated truck and tows it off to his house. In his barn, he discovers the truck is a transformer. Meanwhile, a black ops unit of the C.I.A are on their tail and soon accosts, Mark and his family in their home. Well not technically their home anymore, since the house is for sale.
Anyway, Optimus transforms; save the day. and they become fugitives, on the run. The Autobots then rendezvous to strategizes. At this point, the movie goes off a tangent. We discover, the humans have mapped the genome of the transformers and can now build their own. With this technology, Business Tycoon, Joshua Joyce-owner of Kinetic Solutions, intends to build an army of robots to restore world peace. Not if Megatron or the re-christened Galvatron would have anything to say about that. Galvatron has secretly  manipulated the entire manufacturing process and is reborn.

The action sequences and visual effects were mind-blowing. And some of the action, flowed along with the storyline. Anyway, don't be perturbed, when you see a nerdy-scientist skillfully using a high-powered alien gun like a trained commando; he is from Texas.
The ridiculous dialogue during the entire commotion especially from Joyce, did not work. The conversations between Mark and his daughter's boyfriend felt awkward and I dared say, disturbing. For a movie with so much collateral damage and high body count, it was a shame to see many characters survive.
The movie could have earned more credibility by "killing" a few more main characters. Using that as a plot device to create more drama or a greater sense of danger for the audience. George Martin won't have minded.

BREAKING: ‘Looper’s Rian Johnson To Write, Direct STAR WARS Episode VIII + Write Ep IX!!!

Looper director Rian Johnson is WRITING AND DIRECTING Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX!
This makes sense as this bombshell of a news report updates throughout the day…slowly, the pieces are falling in to place. I’ve already had a source CONFIRM that Rian is not only in talks but has signed on the dotted line for Episode VIII. And it makes sense that his directing VIII will set a template for IX so yeah, he will write a treatment. This leaves speculation open that perhaps another director will come on board for Episode IX; a sincere nod to the OT where a different director took on each chapter.
So yeah, it feels like Rian is in charge of making Episode VIII the Empire Strikes Back of the new trilogy. A nice call on everyone in Schmoeville who is saying as much. So now we see who (if any) will take on IX or if Deadline’s original report (below) will shake out to be true.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

Says Deadline:

Rarely have I seen the revival of a film franchise stir so much fervor as Star Wars, among hot young filmmakers who grew up loving George Lucas’ original film trilogy. In a bombshell move, I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII. I don’t know too much more at this point, but it is in keeping with Disney and Lucasfilm’s strategy of entrusting the venerable franchise to the best and brightest writers and directors, including the spinoff films that are being directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - The Review.

The first, How to kill your Dragon movie, is a classic and one of the best animated movies of all time.  The story of  boy from a dragon-infested village, who could not bear to kill the "pests" as his kinsmen did gleefully. And ends up being, best mates with the deadliest  of them- The dreaded Night Fury. It proved that Dreamworks could compete with Pixar, in the "crayon" world that the latter had dominated since the turn of the millennium.
As a classic, one always felt a sequel would need something really special to meet its predecessor's  lofty standards.  Sadly, it didn't.
The film is written and directed by Dean DeBlois, and stars the voices of Jay BaruchelGerard ButlerCraig Ferguson,America FerreraJonah HillChristopher Mintz-PlasseT.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig with the addition of Kit Harington,Cate Blanchett and Djimon Hounsou (Wikipedia).

The story, huffed and puffed and tried to be too many things, but ended up short.
The animation is mind-blowing as usual. The characters exhibiting life-like movement and facial expressions.
The movie starts five years from the last iteration. Citizens of Berke and the Dragons have truly become compadre. Hiccup and his Night Fury, Toothless shared a special bond. And go on mapping expeditions. Astrid follows suit and along the way, they meet a group of Dragon catchers. After the melee, they discover the existence of a feared Dragon trainer named Drago who is also assembling a dragon army. Hiccup and Astrid run back to Berk to warn the others. Stoick, Hiccup's father  and his protege disagree on the proper approach. Hiccup wants dialogue with Drago despite his father warning that Drago can't be reasoned with. The warning falls on deaf ears. Hiccup flies off with Toothless, with Astrid following, till they reach, first - Eret, Drago's dragon trapper. Then Hiccup flies off again after his father finds him on Erets ship. While in the air, a mysterious Dragon rider accosts him and takes him to a hidden dragon lair. The mysterious dragon rider is later revealed to be his mother. The entire family later unites against Drago's invasion.

It is truly hard to find a story that could improve on the first movie.  But should not excuse the sequel's lack of trying. Majority of the story was spent, advertising the depth of the 3D computer animation.A dismal imitation of the original. Kids' stuff.

Edge Of Tomorrow - The Review.

Edge of Tomorrow gives one, 1000 reasons to love Tom Cruise all over again. Smart and carefully done. Edge of Tomorrow is a 2014 science fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. It is based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka (Wikipedia).
The story revolves round, humanity's battle against an alien invasion. The alien conquest had devastated much of Europe. Buoyed by their first victory at Verdun, the human decide to mount a major assault in northern France. Unknown to them, the aliens have seen them coming. And it was a slaughter.
Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, a spokesman for the war effort. In the beginning of the film,he meets the General of the UDF(United Defense Forces), who sends him to the front lines to documentary the anticipated victory. But the Cage refuses and tries to blackmail the General, who then arrests Cage and strips off him of his rank.

Cage wakes up at Heathrow, demoted. He is in the first wave of attack. On the beech, Cage kills an usually large blue "Mimic", but  is covered in its blood which erodes his body and kills him. He re-awakes again in the same spot at Heathrow Airport. After a few more repetitions, he discovers he is in time-loop. In one of the iterations, he saves "The Angel of Verdun", Rita Vrataski, who tells him to meet her when he wakes up.
When he meets her and discovers that she also had the ability to reset time but lost it after a blood transfusion. They both formulate a plan to find and destroy the Omega- according to the mimic biology, the central nervous system of aliens.

Skillful editing ensured that the repeative time looping did not feel boring. Tom Cruise's performances was brilliant. It is so good to finally see him succeed in another sci-fi flick after the not-so-good Oblivion.Emily Blunt did extremely well in her role. Such storyline really stretches the levels of acting because different iterations in time demands different reactions.
The movie definitely feels like the sci-fi version of Groundhog Day. And it is worth the watch.

Godzilla - The Review

"Let Them Fight!", declared . Who is playing Dr. Ishiro Serizawa - a scientist of a top- secret organization that is responsibility for  MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism).  He was advising the commander on the futility of engaging The MUTOs with military force and suggests that he place his hope on Godzilla, the Alpha Predator, that sits on top of the food chain.

The advice falls on dear ears, and the survival of the human race is hinged on a plan that involves destroying the MUTO with a nuclear bomb. The problem is, the MUTOs eat nuclear material!
It stars Aaron Taylor-JohnsonKen WatanabeElizabeth Olsen,Juliette BinocheSally HawkinsDavid Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. The screenplay is credited to Max Borensteinbut includes contributions from David CallahamDavid S. GoyerDrew Pearce, and Frank Darabont (Wikipedia).
(Spolier Alert)
The story starts with the discovery of a MUTO's fossil along with two cocoons. One of which is open. The hatchling swims to the nearest nuclear facility to feed, where Joe Brody and his wife Sandra work as  Plant Supervisors. His wife dies in the ensuing nuclear leaks caused by the EMP emissions produced by the MUTO hatchling. For 15 years , the hatchling incubates beneath the nuclear station, which is by now, a quarantined area. The loss of his loss drives him to find the truth and learn everything he can about the monsters. This proves useful when Father and Son are arrested for entering the quarantine zone and Brody is able to predict another disaster using the remnants of his research.
The MUTO's EMP is more than a match for the Military Arsenal. The battles between Godzilla and the MUTOs were well choreographed and visually stunning.
The acting is good but there is a lack of characters, one could care for and invest in. At first, Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston seem like a candidate for that but his screen time was abruptly ended at a time, that his passion-filled grief over his wife loss had made a mark in the audiences' hearts. It was a shame really. Maybe the Director, wanted to instill in the audiences' mind that everyone was expendable in the movie.

Godzilla, King of Monster, is a movie worth the watch. So, do so.

Xmen: Days of Future Past - The Review

Bryan Singer somewhat started the golden age of Super Heroes movies with his grounded take on the X-men back in 2000. Since then, movies from the genre, have followed this grounded format and those that don't, for example, Amazing Spiderman 2 gets panned by movie goers and critics alike.
Xmen: Days of Future Past was a potential banana peel due to its complex plot and crowded cast. It required the dexterity of a director of Singer's calibre to pull it off.
And does he do so in flying colors.
Singer was able to combine the large number  of characters without alienating anyone and lets it all play like a sympony on screen. Complex time travel  storyline ? No problem.
The interchanging of the Future and Past fighting scenes, was clearly and coherently done.
Even those in the audience that are unfamiliar with property, will not feel lost.
The movie  ensembles a cast of Hugh JackmanJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceHalle BerryAnna PaquinEllen PageNicholas HoultShawn AshmorePeter DinklageIan McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The story is written by Simon KinbergMatthew Vaughn, and Jane Goldman, with Kinberg writing the screenplay (Wikipedia).

The acting was superb with notable performances from Fassbender and James McAvoy. Hugh Jackman put in a good shift as the Wolverine. It was refreshing to see a more articulate Wolverine than the usual angry Wolverine which we have grown accustomed to watching. Peter Dinklage was clearly unused as a villain and it was obvious, he was merely a plot device. Which is surprising that he left the Games of Thrones to play such a minor character. Jennifer Lawrence once again struggles to put up an inspiring performance as Mystique as least one that could equal what audiences have come to expect from

(Spoiler Alert)
The movie starts in the distant future, with the Sentinel assault on the X-men refuge.
After annihilating almost all of them. The X-men had found a way to go a few days back in time to warn themselves of an impending Sentinel invasion. Since they could go a few days back why not decades back before the sentinels were ever made. Mystique's murder of Trask- the creator the Sentinel and her subsequent capture is the anchor in the timeline which Wolverine would be berth to. He will wake in his younger body and find Prof X. and Magneto who is imprisoned beneath the Pentagon. QuickSilver's speed comes in handy in Magneto's rescue mission which easily is  the high point of the movie. The dialogue between Fassender and McAvoy were intense and gripping. And when juxtaposed with the future interactions of McKellen's Magneto and Stewart's Xavier unravels the complexities of their relationship.
The continuity problems that were pervasive throughout the movie was all corrected at the end in one swoop as a new timeline was drawn  for newer Xmen movies.

The few negatives are the seemingly lack of originality in some of the scenes. For example, the climatic end scene where Magneto points guns at the president and his entourage is similar to  one in  the First Xmen movie. The Maximoff a.k.a QuickSliver's scene felt like a ripoff of The Matrix and there are other Plot holes which you can find here.

This movie is a very solid entry into the summer blockbuster calander and has everything you want to see in a summer movie. Be sure to stick around for the post-credit scene, for a glimpse of Apocalypse.

The Major Plot Hole That Almost Ruins X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

X-men: Days Of Future Past directed by Bryan Singer just hit the movie theaters across the nation. And unsurprisingly, it has been a big hit with audiences.
This new installment makes great strides in pushing the X-men franchise forward and is the best movie of the series albeit a slight improvement on Xmen: First Class. Its darker, tense depiction of the mythology, will play well with fans who, will definitely "forgive" a few of the glaring errors in the movie.

Bryan Singer did a great job in successfully weaving a very complex storyline with lot of characters without alienating anyone with the exception of /Trask, who was obviously under-used.
Read more in the review here. Lets move straight to the errors (Spoilers Inside).

A movie with such a complex storyline is bound to have errors although Singer's dexterity as a movie maker kept it to the minimum.
1. The timeline of the Wolverine's bone and metal claws created some confusion

2. Prof X's resurrection was never explained. Singer should have given some kind of explanation   especially when he included the scene of Wolverine killing Jean Grey in Xmen: The Last Stand. thereby negating the excuse that he was ignoring Brett Ratner's work.

3. In the climatic end scene, Magneto searches for the President, who is tucked away in an underground bunker. Magneto not only manages to penetrate deep down (I assuming this since the movie did not show how long they had to go underground but usually, bunkers are buried hundreds of feet underground and if it was not, then that is another error)  into where the bunker is, and not only able to bring out the bunker, he is able to know that the president is in there.
How is that possible? Except Magneto's helmet is a portable cerebro, there is no way he should know that there are people in the bunker.  Well some might overlook this but considering that Magneto himself at the beginning of the movie was buried, hundreds of feet beneath the ground and could not use his powers to bring an object from the surface to his underground prison to enable his escape, how then is he able to to use his powers to go hundreds of feet underground to bring out the bunker?
In First Class, Banshee/Prof X coordinated to find the submarine where Sebastian Shaw was hiding in and Magneto did the rest. This also contradicts the whole, imprisonment of Magneto under hundreds of feet of sand and concrete would stop him, since the same character pulled a submarine from hundreds of feet beneath the ocean.
The last time I checked, water, which the ocean is made from, is a non-metal. Therefore, Magneto's underground prison and his ability to find the President were  serious plot holes.

4. Mystique electing not to kill Trask IMHO is not sufficient to dissuade the President from, at least having a contingency plan against the mutants. On the contrary, a mutant "invasion" of the White House, should only reinforce the need to continue with the sentinel program. The seemingly impervious White house just gets ripped apart and everything is okay? Singer needed something else to correct the timeline. A lot more thought should have been put into the end.

Captain America- The Winter Soldier Review

Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Avengers 1.5, as some might call it. Is the sequel to the Captain America: The First Avenger and the ninth installment in Marvels. Some of the characters in the Avengers: Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and  Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury return with very good performances. Chris Evans is still the shield wielding all action good guy that is Captain America. The sequel tries to be a political thriller of the 60s and 70s and almost succeeds.

The flick starts off showing how Steve Rogers is coping in the modern world and quickly establishes his relationship with Falcon who is also a military vet. The black widow summons Rogers for his mission. During the mission, we see a bit of Captain America's fighting skills as he dominates the guards protecting the ship. After the mission, the dialogue between Steve Rogers and Nick Fury displays the two sides of the debate, the movie is centered on - the pros and cons of a surveillance state. The movie tries not to take sides but as it progresses, one may get where is it leaning towards.

Spoiler Alert
The Winter Soldier makes his first appearance during the assassination attempt scene on Nick Fury. Which must the best action sequence in the entire movie. Fury escapes to Roger's apartment and informs him that SHIELD is compromised. The Winter soldier fires shots at Nick Fury and "kills" him. Captain America gives chase and throws his mighty shield at The Winter Soldier, only for him to catch and fling it back.
The story continues with Captain America now a fugitive and trying to evade Shield operatives and bringing down Hydra.
The action in this movie is well choreographed and at times, feels very intense.  The plot and acting is excellent. It is arguable if this movie is better than the Avengers but one thing we can agree on is that is one of the best super hero movie of all time, whatever side you are on;DC or Marvel.,

Top 5 Global Hostage Scenes

Global hostage situations are rife in scifi movies. Some are lame while others have a place in the history books. We are not talking about "mere" hostage scenes involving a few people, but rather the threat of an extinction level event being battered around if the villain does not have his way.
We will look at some really cool ones. If you have other suggestions, let me know.

1.Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen
The "we are not alone" question is let out of the bag, when the Fallen hooks himself up to telecommunication wires and transmits his threats to the entire world; asking for Sam in return for man's survival.

2.Superman
Terence Stamp's portrayal of Superman's nemesis was much superior to Callum's. And in this video , you can see why.

3.Man of Steel

General Zod announced himself to earthlings in the most creepy way. Demanding the people of Earth handover to him in 24 hours, a Kryptonian living amongst them or else.

Star Trek

USS Enterprise finds the planet in grave danger from an alien probe attempting to contact now-extinct humpback whales. The crew travel to Earth's past to find whales who can answer the probe's call (Wikipedia) or else the planet is doomed.
