The Pacific Rim - The Review
Gel Toro's Pacific Rim is a visually stunning entry to the summer block-buster movie roster.
The story is about Aliens, Kaiju Monsters who invade Earth from a portal on the ocean bed.The humans then construct Jaegars to combat the invaders. These massive Jaegars are controlled by two pilots who are "mind-melded" by a neural bridge. One of such battles is seen at the start of the movie which results in the death of Raleigh Becket's brother. He goes a self-imposed exile but then recalled after many years by Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elber ) who needs experienced Jaegars fighters to carry out the continued defense of the motherland.
As the movie progressed, the aliens increased their frequency and numbers in entering the rift. With each entry , the monsters had a commiserate increase in size and adaptation to the Jaegars' arsenal.
In the final onslaught, it would require Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam ) and Mori who have now formed a formidable team to destroy the bridge that links both worlds.
In between that, there were stunning visuals of fight scenes between the Jaegers and the Kaiju accompanied by massives and wilful destruction of buildings and property . Which makes one wonder if the protectors of the earth were not just as effective as the aliens in oblilatering civilisation.
The story is as original as it is one-dimensional. Be-plagued by poor character development and weak lines. The best writing was left for Idris Elber as evidence in his numerous speeches. Judging by the crappy lines that the rest of the cast had to recite, maybe Elber improvised onscreen.
It takes great villains to produce great heroes . The Kaijus don't fit that bill. Inherently mindless clones sent to destroy human cities. The Director showed no inclination to at least portray their own view of the world and their quest. That is left to one of the scientists who finds a way to mind-meld with the Kaiju's to understand their intentions.
The downside of this is that the audience possibly could not root for the protagonist because of the story's predictably or even share in the their state of danger.
If you are into video-game-like movies then this flick is for you. I felt it was like Battleship all over again.Surprisingly, it has been well received by critics. Maybe they know something I don't.
